Accessible Housing Consultation
Back in the Architects' Journal this week after I was asked to comment on Accessible Housing alongside RIBA President Alan Jones following the Government's recent consultation for improving the Part M Building Regulations as part of the National Strategy for Disabled People.
"It shouldn't be too much of an ask to leave the house unaided, cook your own food, put your children to bed or not have to wash in the kitchen sink because the bathroom is too small.
It's important to note that M4(2) really is only asking for pretty minor changes, such as level thresholds, a downstairs toilet, slightly wider doorways and room for a wheelchair turning circle. These are hardly radical design implementations and will benefit every occupant regardless of ability or age."
